Session Description: 

This session is included in the AHIA Body of Knowledge Webinar Eight-Part Series which covers, at a high level, key points for topics included in the Body of Knowledge upon which the CHIAP® exam is based.  It is not intended to teach to the exam, but to the AHIA Body of Knowledge of healthcare internal auditing.  Webinar topics include: Business Aspects of Care Setting, Regulatory Environment, Compliance, Revenue Cycle, Operational/Financial Functions, Administrative Functions, and Information Technology. Participants who attend these webinars will gain a basic understanding of these areas and receive references, as needed, for further study.

This session will provide participants with an overview of key Information Technology Body of Knowledge areas by examining the following technologies which are integral to healthcare operations and quality patient care delivery:

  • Electronic Medical Record Systems
  • Revenue Cycle Systems
  • Information Governance
  • Cybersecurity
  • Biomedical Devices
  • Clinical Systems

Topics covered will include how these information technologies support key healthcare delivery processes, key components comprising these six areas, definitions and nomenclature, management challenges, internal control implications, and internal audit approaches.

Learning Objectives:
Following this discussion, participants will be able to:

  • Describe six key areas of healthcare delivery information technologies (electronic medical record systems, revenue cycle systems, IT governance, cybersecurity, biomedical devices, and clinical systems) and how they inter-relate.
  • Identify internal control considerations for each of the six areas and analyze related risks.
  •  Create audit objectives for conducting pre-implementation and post-implementation reviews of these information technology reviews.
  • Improve coordination internal audit, billing compliance, and information security activities.

Who should attend: Individuals working in healthcare internal audit who are preparing for the Certified Healthcare Internal Audit Professional (CHIAP) Certification exam and/or those who wish to expand their professional knowledge in the AHIA established Body of Knowledge for healthcare internal auditing.

Glen Mueller, MBA, CIA, CISA, CISM, Chief Audit Executive, Cornell Unviersity and Weill Cornell Medicine
Glen is Chief Audit Executive for Cornell University, a leading research university with an operating budget of $4.7 billion, including Weill Cornell Medicine. He has successfully built nationally recognized corporate compliance programs, internal audit functions, IT audit functions, information security programs, and ERM programs and is a recognized speaker and thought leader at national professional organization conferences.
