This session is included in AHIA Body of Knowledge Webinar Seven-Part Series which covers, at a high level, key points for topics included in the Body of Knowledge upon which the CHIAP™ exam is based. It is not intended to teach to the exam, but to the AHIA Body of Knowledge of healthcare internal auditing. Webinar topics include: Business Aspects of Care Setting, Regulatory Environment, Compliance, Revenue Cycle, Operational/Financial Functions, Administrative Functions, and Information Technology. Participants who attend these webinars will gain a basic understanding of these areas and receive references, as needed, for further study.
The Regulatory Environment webinar will provide an overview of regulatory bodies including CMS, OIG, OCR, DEA, FDA, The Joint Commission, and State Regulators and an over view of regulations including HIPAA, Stark and Anti-Kickback, False Claims Act, CMS Conditions of Participation, CMS Conditions of Payment, Affordable Care Act, Physician Payment Sunshine Act, EMTALA, and IRS Regulation 501(r).

- Discuss regulatory bodies and regulations that have a significant impact to healthcare internal auditing.
- Explain the role of these regulatory bodies.

Debra is a nationally known leader with 37 years’ audit experience of which 26 years’ experience is in the healthcare profession. She has been the leader in establishing a certified compliance program in two separate healthcare systems. Debra is well versed in matters of internal auditing, internal controls, compliance, privacy, information security and various regulations. Debra’s professional experience includes having the responsibilities for startup, implementing and maintaining audit, compliance, privacy, and information security corporate offices for various healthcare entities, including hospitals, home health agencies, nursing homes, providers and other health systems. She has utilized models of staffing departments and outsourcing arrangements, which includes audits in areas of operational, financial, compliance and information technology. Debra works closely with Administration to support a continuous and consistent culture of integrity and ethical behavior.
She has been a board member, committee member and continues to be a member on many professional organizations. Debra throughout the years has been the recipient of Audit and Compliance Best Practices awards. She has authored and co-authored publications and has been featured in the American Healthcare Leaders January 2018 publication – Article “What You Know Can’t Hurt You” and most recently on the July 2019 cover of Compliance Today “A Sense of Purpose” by Healthcare Compliance Association.
