Session Description: 

This session will provide an overview of High Level Disinfection and Sterilization, what the risk to your organization may be, and the basics of how to effectively audit High Level Disinfection and Sterilization processes.

Following this discussion, participants will be able to:

  • Describe what High Level Disinfection and Sterilization means, where they are used, why they are important and what the risk surrounding the processes are.
  • Discuss The Joint Commission Infection Prevention Standards for High Level Disinfection and Sterilization.
  • Review essential High Level Disinfection and Sterilization processes for semi-critical and critical devices and describe how they can be audited. 
  • Describe the value Internal Audit can provide in auditing High Level Disinfection and Sterilization processes.

Speaker Bio(s):
Erin Panek, RN, BSN - SCL Health

Erin joined the SCL Health Internal Audit Services Department as a Senior Clinical Auditor in February 2016 and was promoted to Clinical Audit Program Manager in January of 2018. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Nursing from Sacramento State University in 2006 and started her nursing career in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California. She relocated to Colorado in 2007, where she worked until early 2016 as a staff nurse with a focus on outpatient education in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit at SCL Health Good Samaritan Medical Center. Her auditing focus at SCL Health is clinical operations for both inpatient and outpatient areas.

Please Note: If you wish to receive continuing professional education credits for participating in the discussion, you are required to register and pay the registration fees. You will also be required to answer 3 of the 4 questions asked online during the discussion to qualify for CPE credit.
